Further on from the Intermediate Course is the Advanced course, which will hone those skills even further and the dogs learn such things as “scentwork” and the “send-away”. Many, many dogs find such activities a lot of fun and very fulfilling and continue “training” for their entire lives. Why stop at the basics when your dog will get so much out of his or her weekly class?
This course really steps things up a level and a lot more will be expected of both you and your dog. A lot of the course will be done with the dogs off lead, so it will be expected that your dog will be very attentive towards you and that he/she has a very sound recall.
What sort of exercises will be taught during the Advanced Course?
As all dogs attending the Advanced Course will have not only the basics in place, but also more difficult skills, everything will be stepped up a level and more will be expected of both you and your dog. Here’s some examples of the type of exercises that will be in the course:
Formal Recall (including the “wait” and with distractions)
Calling away from extreme distraction
Off Lead Heelwork
The “Leave” (at distance)
The “Stay” (for at least five minutes - half of which will be "out of sight")
Road Walking
The Emergency Stop (with your dog both coming towards you and going away from you)
The Send-Away (onto a mat, at the other end of the hall)
Positions across the hall
The “A” Recall
One session will include some fun agility, with safe, low, indoor equipment.
There will be several other exercises included within the course; the above are just a few examples. During the first week Katie will give out the training manuals, which include details of the exercises that we will do each week, as well as support material, to complement the course.
The Advanced Course is for dogs of a very sound temperament. Dogs who show an adverse reaction to being in close contact with other dogs would probably be better having a one-to-one session, in the first instance.
Ideally, dogs attending the Advanced Course will have already completed the Intermediate Course or will have attended the Advanced Classes with Pawsitive (Kadarow's old name), but if you feel your dog would be suited to Advanced (e.g. your dog has passed the KCGCDS at Silver level), then feel free to enquire with Katie about booking onto the course.
